Explanation: A primary alkanol oxidizes first to an alkanol (aldehyde), and on further oxidation gives an alkanoic acid. Likewise, an alkanol (aldehyde) is readily oxidized to the corresponding alkanoic acid. (Ketones resist mild oxidation, but under vigorous/cleaving conditions they can ultimately yield carboxylic acids.) Hence, the common “final” oxidation product in this series is the carboxylic acid.
